WHAT TO DO

ATTRACTIONS

Any time of year, rain or shine, you’re spoilt for choice in Phuket. With an abundance of beaches, parks and forests to explore, a rich history and culture to discover, and fantastic dining and nightlife choices, the only thing you’ll find lacking is the time to see all that the island has to offer. The range of activities in Phuket continues to grow in sophistication and variety, offering visitors of all budgets, tastes, ages and abilities something to enjoy.

SHOPPING

Phuket is a shopaholic’s paradise! The island has a great variety of shopping, from bustling open-air village food markets, noisy night markets, street stalls and local shops to western style department stores and upmarket specialist shops.

With traditional handicrafts, beautifully designed clothing, jewellery, antiques, housewares and much more to choose from, the only thing you’ll regret about shopping in Phuket is that you didn’t bring a bigger suitcase!

WHAT TO EXPECT

TRANSPORTATION

Getting Around in Phuket is easy. Most of the beach resorts are small enough to walk around and most hotels are located close to the beach, restaurants and shopping areas. If you’d rather not walk, or if your hotel is not on one of the main beaches, your hotel can arrange for a taxi or tuk tuk.

If you want to go exploring the island on your own, there are plenty of places to hire cars (see below) or you can take the local bus. There are two types of buses – the Songtaew – blue openair buses that run between Phuket Town and the main resorts, and air-conditioned “micro” buses that service the Phuket Town area.

FOOD

If you love food, you will love Phuket. There are restaurants to suit every taste serving a huge selection of western and Asian food. The variety of cuisine and dining experiences is one of the major attractions of the island. You can eat breakfast at your hotel, lunch at a local noodle stall by the roadside, and have dinner with fine wines in a sophisticated air-conditioned restaurant.

While Thai food is renowned world-wide for its wonderful flavours and fresh ingredients, Phuket is especially famous for its seafood, and, you don’t have to empty your bank account to enjoy the most sumptuous of dishes. Browse through our location and food guides, or go straight to our handy Restaurant Reviews Guide with contact details and reviews of restaurants all over the island.

CULTURE

Thailand displays some very distinct and refined culture, developed over the centuries from early Lanna flourishing through to the golden ages of Sukhothai, Ayutthaya and beyond. This includes costume, dance, music, social graces – such as the famous wai greeting – along with architecture, religious art, woodcarving, and more. Chiang Mai is one of the best tourist destinations in Thailand to experience these.

Even in the modern era, the Thais, who have a knack for creativity and aesthetics, have stamped their own identity with some commendable contemporary design. As a result, the city has a very attractive art and craft trade, often involving traditional methods that have been passed down through generations. Festivals, like Songkran and Loy Krathong (Yee Peng), are uniquely experienced
in the city, while art, dance, religious art, and even the colourful hill tribes, are commonly on display.
